The Animal Besides Us
A filmic inquiry on the relation between man and animal from Indian and Central European perspectives
As a central pillar of the trans-disciplinary research project IMPORT/EXPORT, this documentary essay delves into the strategic and emotional dimensions of cultural transfer.
"The Animal Besides Us" (Austria, 70 min) examines the "Moving Concepts" within the circulation of ideas between India and German-speaking Europe. The film explores how we define our boundaries—geographical, ethical, and social—through our interactions with the animal world.
By juxtaposing diverse perspectives on companionship, utility, and survival, the work challenges the reciprocal perceptions between a 'Third World' country and the industrial nations of the 'First World'.
